01
Data stored on the device
Vocabulary libraries, pending imports, study plans, practice history, mistakes, unfamiliarity, companion state, classroom settings, and child profile details are stored on the device by default.
A parent may enter a name, grade, and birthday month and day. The app does not require a legal name and does not store the birth year. These details personalize labels, grade information, and companion dialogue.
The developer does not operate an account server that centrally receives this local data and cannot remotely view your library or practice history.
02
Photos, text recognition, and audio
Photo access
The app requests camera or Photos access only when a parent chooses to take or select an image. Images are used for on-device text recognition, and detected entries are shown for parent review. ClassWords does not upload these photos to a developer server.
Word audio
Word pronunciation uses Apple's system speech synthesis. The current version does not request microphone access and does not record, store, or upload a child's voice.
03
Online meaning and part-of-speech lookup
Online lookup is off by default. After a parent completes confirmation and enables it, entries that cannot be completed locally may be sent to:
- MyMemory Translation, for Chinese meanings.
- Free Dictionary API, for English dictionary information and parts of speech.
Requests do not include a child's name, birthday, grade, results, photos, complete library, or practice history. Third-party services may process network information such as IP address and the English query according to their own policies.
Parents may disable online lookup in Settings at any time. Local dictionary lookup and manual editing remain available.
04
iCloud backup, file export, and sharing
Private iCloud backup
When a parent initiates a backup, the complete backup is saved in the user's private iCloud Drive container for recovery after changing devices or reinstalling. Recent backups are retained. iCloud data is managed through the user's Apple Account and Apple services.
Export and sharing
Parents may export a full backup, CSV library, or library package and use the system share sheet to send it to an app or contact they choose. The parent controls where exported files are stored and who receives them.
A parent may create a closed classroom through their own iCloud account. Classroom features share only a nickname, avatar style, words studied, study streak, and pet summary for classroom presence and the class leaderboard. Specific words, answers, mistakes, photos, and complete child profile details are not shared. The app does not provide a public vocabulary community or upload those learning details to the developer.
05
Study reminders
When a parent sets a study time, the app may request notification permission and schedule local reminders on the device. Reminder schedules are not uploaded to the developer and can be disabled in the app or system settings.
06
Children's privacy
ClassWords is designed for children whose learning content is managed with help from a parent or teacher. The current version does not require a child to create an online account, contains no ads, does not build advertising profiles, and does not intentionally collect children's photos, voices, or learning history for the developer.
Parents are responsible for choosing imported materials, enabling optional online lookup and iCloud backup, and managing exported library files.
07
View, correct, export, and delete
- View and correct: edit or delete content in the library editor and Settings.
- Export: export a library or complete backup for storage and migration.
- Delete on-device data: deleting the app removes its local data from that device.
- Delete exported files: remove them from their storage location or receiving app.
- Delete iCloud backups: use backup management in the app or manage your own iCloud Drive.
08
Policy changes
If app features or data handling change materially, we will update this page and its effective date. New data collection or third-party services will also be reflected in App Store privacy disclosures.
