Import and OCR
What if a vocabulary sheet is not fully recognized?
A phrase or wrapped meaning is incomplete
Keep the photo straight, evenly lit, and include both the English and Chinese areas. Detected entries first appear in the review list. Check each one before adding it. For wrapped phrases, tap Edit in the candidate list and complete the entry.
Why is a candidate marked as a duplicate?
ClassWords ignores case, repeated spaces, and common hyphen differences, and checks both the permanent library and pending queue. The warning prevents accidental duplicates while still letting a parent review the source.
What if my list contains English only?
The app first checks its local dictionary. A parent may also enable online lookup in Settings. Only the English entry is sent to the dictionary or translation service, and the result still needs review.
Can I organize the library on a computer?
Yes. Export a CSV from the library editor, edit it in Excel, and import it again. Start with the blank template and keep the original column headings.
Practice and plans
How do plans and answer history work?
Why are meaning, spelling, and reading tracked separately?
Recognizing a word does not guarantee correct spelling or reading. Each skill has its own unfamiliarity and next review date. Learners can switch the order, but all assigned skills must finish before the session is complete.
Will a missed word return?
Yes. A mistake raises that skill's review priority. Same-day retries are limited so a session does not become exhausting. Unmastered skills return later in the session, in a future session, or on a dedicated mistake day.
Does changing a plan erase progress?
No. Every plan stores its own completion, answer history, and companion growth. Changing days or daily words rebalances future work without turning completed work back into unlearned work.
Why can the daily word count change?
The app recalculates from remaining words, mastery, mistakes, and days left. A difficult day may add future review or suggest extending the plan.
Backup and restore
How can I protect a carefully edited library?
Will an app update delete my library?
A normal update does not delete on-device data. Do not delete the app without a backup, because deleting an app also removes its local data.
What backup routine do you recommend?
Export a full backup after a large import or important edit. You may also save to your private iCloud Drive space, where the app keeps recent backups for recovery.
How do I move to a new device?
Install ClassWords on the new device, then choose a full backup in Settings or restore one from your private iCloud backup list. The app asks for confirmation before replacement.
Privacy and network
What data can leave the device?
Are school worksheet photos uploaded?
No. Photos are processed by on-device text recognition and are not uploaded to the developer's server.
Does the app record a child's voice?
No. The current version uses system speech synthesis to play words and does not collect or upload a child's voice.
What does online lookup send?
Online lookup is off by default. When a parent enables it, only the English entry being queried is sent. A child's name, birthday, results, photos, and complete library are not included.
